2019 Jordan - Final Thoughts

We have once again been blessed with an excellent Gate 1 guide. Hazim was Gate 1's first Jordan guide. He's knowledgeable, thoughtful, attentive, funny and and eager to share his country with visitors.

I will miss the food here. I've enjoyed salads, olives, hummus and babaganoush at every meal. There are Western breakfast options like omelets, pastries and cereals, but I'm not a big breakfast person and love the Arabian options. This morning, after asking Hazim about the ubiquitous "foul station" at every breakfast buffet, I decided to try it. Pronounced "fool", it is a slurry of fava beans with an assortment of garnishes. Per his recommendation, I added tahini, cumin, chopped parsley and lemon. It was awesome. Now I regret not trying it earlier. Another reason to return to Jordan.

This, in the other hand, does not tempt me at all.

This morning we solved one of the great mysteries of urban civilization. We had wondered earlier in the week, while watching pigeons on a ledge, where they build their nests and raise their young. One never sees a fledgling or newly hatched pigeon. This morning we looked out of our twelfth floor window, where Greg had seen a pigeon strutting about. And lo, there in the dawn light was the evidence.

We couldn't help but wonder how it kept track of which window on which floor, but there you have it.

Amman is growing fast. What looked like little box houses from the air are actually 4 and 5 story cubes of flats and villas. On our ride to the airport our driver pointed out graveled hillsides that, within about year, will be covered with new housing. There are 35,000 - 45,000 new apartments added every year. Most are built using the white limestone indigenous to northern Jordan.

It's been a lovely trip here. I wouldn't hesitate to come back, but we have other places new to us to explore first.
